2. About Z-Code Games.
Z-code games are interactive fiction games built for the Z-machine, a virtual machine created by Infocom in the late 1970s to deliver text-based adventure games across different platforms. The Z-machine allowed Infocom to write games once and make them playable on various operating systems, which was revolutionary for that era. Games were written in "Z-code," a compressed format suited to the memory limitations of early computers. These games feature immersive text-only gameplay where players interact by typing commands like "go north" or "pick up sword," and the game responds with descriptive text to advance the story.
Z-code games focus heavily on exploration, puzzle-solving, and narrative depth. Popular titles like Zork, Planetfall, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy are known for intricate worlds, challenging puzzles, and engaging storylines. The player navigates through a series of "rooms" or locations, collecting items and interacting with characters to solve puzzles and progress. Z-code games rely solely on text, making the player’s imagination an essential part of the experience. These games can be intellectually demanding and are beloved for their detailed writing and clever challenges.
The interactive fiction community has also created new Z-code games, keeping the format alive and evolving. Authoring tools like Inform 7 allow creators to design Z-code games using a natural-language-like syntax, making the process more accessible.
