Frotz, originally developed in 1995 by Stefan Jokisch, then later maintained by David Griffith, is a program that allows you to play text adventures in a format known as Z-Code.Z-code games are classic text-based adventures where you control the story by typing commands like "go north", "take lantern", or "open door." Originally developed by Infocom in the 1980s for games like Zork, they offer deep storytelling, challenging puzzles, and immersive worlds—all without graphics. These games run on interpreters like Frotz, making them playable on modern devices. Whether you're exploring ancient ruins, solving mysteries, or surviving in a sci-fi world, Z-code games are all about using your imagination and wits to progress. They're a must-play for fans of interactive fiction and old-school adventure gaming
How Does Accessi Frotz Fit Into This?
Accessi Frotz is a side project I worked on over several months, driven by a desire to recapture the fun of my younger years—exploring fantastical worlds, causing chaos, battling dwarves, and inevitably getting lost in mazes.While there have always been some fairly accessible solutions for playing Z-Code games, none quite met my needs. I wanted a simple interface, a scrollable output window, and built-in screen reader support—features that were either missing or not well-implemented in existing interpreters.
And so, Accessi Frotz was born!
How does it work??
Post download and, if you decide to get the installable version, installation you will find the program has a fairly simple interface, offering you to either choose a game you have already gotten yourself, or to choose one from our game's catalogue.the catalogue requires you have an internet connection, as it downloads it from the If Archive but all other parts of the game are completely offline.
The game window itself is a simple input output design allowing you to tab between them as necessary.
There are a few other keystrokes you can find in the documentation but really, that's all there is too it!
